Position Description:

The Communications Specialist, Media & Community Relations is an integral member of the Communications team who helps build the hospital’s local and provincial reputation as a leader in delivering regional acute care. Reporting to the Senior Director of Communications, the position is responsible for executing the communications plan of the hospital by generating stories and other content for external audiences. The position works with media and community partners to inform communities across the Durham Region about the work of the hospital.

Job Duties:

The Communications Advisor – External Relations helps coordinate and support:
* Media Relations – including cultivating media contacts, pitching stories, accompanying media through the hospital, advertising coordination etc.
* Community Development – including attendance at community events, engaging in social media through the organization’s corporate accounts etc.
* Issues Management – including proactively identifying issues, working with partners to mitigate risks and establish effective communications plans etc.
* Crisis Communications – including being on-call from time to time, communicating effectively under pressure, crafting messages etc.
* Change Management communications – including creating campaigns and tailoring messages to targeted audiences etc.
* Stakeholder Engagement – including government relations, managing relationships with key community partners, engaging with patient and family representatives throughout the hospital etc.
* Social Media – including content development, strategy, community/followership engagement
* Planning – Assist in the creation of the annual communications strategy for Lakeridge Health and implement specific components of that strategy.
* Event Planning – including logistics, creating content, speechwriting etc.


* Graduate of a relevant post-secondary program and/or at least two (2) years of related experience;
* Excellent written and verbal communications, including ability to integrate strategic key messages and to appropriately tailor messages for identified target audiences;
* Proven ability to respond to requests from media, including developing key messages, media materials, identify and coach spokespersons, act as a spokesperson etc.;
* Ability to work with internal clients with a diverse range of needs and communications expertise;
* Ability to thrive in a team-centred environment;
* Excellent problem-solving, facilitation and negotiation skills including the ability to think strategically and critically;
* Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office computer applications and creative/media/graphic design applications such as Adobe suite of products, Movie Maker, Final Cut Pro or alternative;
* Demonstrated photography skills an asset;
* Awareness of the communities serviced by Lakeridge Health; and,
* Preferred experience in a health care or professional news production environment.

* Proven good attendance record with capability of maintaining this same standard.
